STRAIGHT UP BYES THIS WEEK SEASON RECORD
No point spreads here. John Kryk tells you who is going to win each game ... and why
Guess I’m not improving. After going 12-3 with my Week 4 NFL picks — straight up, not against the spread — I went 12-3 again last week. So, no more wheel-spinning. Onward!
Philadelphia at New York Giants
KRYK PICK: Philadelphia
I was right. Picked it Wednesday. Up to 3-3 on Thursdays, and three in a row.
1 P.M. GAMES Tampa Bay at Atlanta
KRYK PICK: Atlanta
Surely this is the week the Falcons end their losing streak, now at three games. A loss and Atlanta drops deeper into the NFC South basement at 1-5, and head coach Dan Quinn’s seat gets hotter.
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati
KRYK PICK: Pittsburgh
First of two annual hate fests between these AFC North archrivals. The Bengals own the best record in the conference (4-1) after undefeated Kansas City. Pittsburgh needs the win more.
L.A. Chargers at Cleveland
KRYK PICK: Los Angeles The Browns last week knocked off the Ravens and their ace defence. This week they play host to the Chargers and their ace offence. Different deal. QB Phil Rivers has never been better.
Buffalo at Houston
KRYK PICK: Houston
If the Texans and QB Deshaun Watson view this game as a gimme, they’ll get beat. The Bills D now seems legit. Jerry Hughes is a Qb-hitting demon. Texans, in a low-scoring close one.
Chicago at Miami
KRYK PICK: Chicago
The Dolphins’ offensive line is injury ravaged. Not a good place to be with Khalil Mack and the passer-pulverizing Bears coming to town. Miami QB Ryan Tannehill faces a long afternoon.
Arizona at Minnesota
KRYK PICK: Minnesota
Can the Cards win two road games in succession? Absolutely not. At least not here. The Vikings under-estimated the visiting Bills in Week 3 and that won’t happen again, versus an even worse team.
Indianapolis at New York Jets
KRYK PICK: Indianapolis The Jets and their rookie QB Sam Darnold so far haven’t been able to put together two good games in a row. The Colts might be a one-man wrecking crew, but that man is Andrew Luck. Edge, Indy.
Seattle vs. Oakland at London
KRYK PICK: Oakland
Maybe on a different continent the Raiders can play well overall and win their first game in regulation. The Seahawks have needed good fortune to win two games so far. Hunchin’ on the Raiders.
Carolina at Washington
KRYK PICK: Washington The Redskins just got destroyed in New Orleans on Monday night, while the Panthers needed a 63-yard field goal to avoid losing to the lousy Giants. Washington rebounds, especially on defence.
LATER GAMES L.A. Rams at Denver
KRYK PICK: Los Angeles There is no good reason to not pick the Rams, weekly, until we see one on the football field. They’re a legit 5-0. The Broncos seem to be unraveling. They might step up and steal this one, but I doubt it.
Jacksonville at Dallas
4:25 p.m. KRYK PICK: Jacksonville The proud Jaguars defence got embarrassed in Kansas City. Stopping the Cowboys attack, in comparison, is a lot easier. The Dallas D finally is good, but Jax QB Blake Bortles will do enough.
Baltimore at Tennessee
KRYK PICK: Baltimore
This is basically a carbon copy of the Ravens’ opponent a week ago, a team with a strong, aggressive defence but a still unreliable offence. This time, Baltimore pulls a W out of a snore-fest.
Kansas City at New England
KRYK PICK: Kansas City Wrestled with this one all week. Stands to reason Bill Belichick, whom ESPN says is 23-0 at home since ‘01 against QBS under age 25, will slow up Mahomes. But, gawd, that Pats defence is slow.
MONDAY NIGHT San Francisco at Green Bay
KRYK PICK: Green Bay
This matchup maybe looked good on paper in April, but with QB Jimmy Garoppolo out and successor C.J. Beathard still unable to make quick decisions in Kyle Shanahan’s attack, the Pack ought to roll.
Detroit, New Orleans 49-27-2 (.641)
Phil Rivers and the Los Angeles Chargers take on the Browns in Cleveland today.
