No point spreads here. John Kryk tells you who is going to win each game ... and why
I was due for a clunker week. And had one.
Last week I went 8-5 in picking NFL winners — straight up, not against the spread. Not good.
Let’s get right to it for
Carolina at Pittsburgh
KRYK PICK: Pittsburgh
I was right. Picked it Wednesday. Steelers smoked ’em. Ultimate example of the advantage home teams have on three days’ rest. My record’s up to 6-4 on Thursdays.
12 P.M. GAMES Detroit at Chicago
KRYK PICK: Chicago
The Lions are missing a couple of starters, including their top cover corner in Darius Slay. They seem vulnerable to a beat-down by a first-place Bears team that keeps overachieving.
New Orleans at Cincinnati
KRYK PICK: New Orleans Seven straight wins for the Saints. Even though Dez Bryant is gone now after the newly signed WR tore an Achilles in practice on Friday, New Orleans’ attack should keep on rolling.
Atlanta at Cleveland
KRYK PICK: Atlanta
The Falcons go for their fourth straight win after a 1-4 start. Matt Ryan and the offence are on fire. He has thrown 17 TDS against just one interception over the past six games.
Jacksonville at Indianapolis
KRYK PICK: Jacksonville Most pickers of note seem to be taking the Colts. Not me. The Jaguars are just too talented to keep losing to bad or mediocre teams. The Colts are improving, but they’re not good yet.
Arizona at Kansas City
KRYK PICK: Kansas City One of the mismatches of the year in the NFL. There’s no reason to believe the Cardinals can hold Kansas City below 40 points, and 50 might not even be possible.
Buffalo at N.Y. Jets
KRYK PICK: New York
Does it matter who quarterbacks the Bills in this one — Nathan Peterman in his fifth career start, rookie Josh Allen in his sixth, or emergency signee Matt Barkley in his seventh? Not really, no.
Washington at Tampa Bay
KRYK PICK: Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers can seemingly run up 500 yards of offence on anybody, and not always mostly in garbage time. This time they ought to do it in a victory, as the Skins O-line is decimated.
New England at Tennessee
KRYK PICK: New England Six straight wins, all earned, for the Patriots. Titans coming off a big win in Dallas, but although Tennessee’s good defence ought to make things tough for Brady and Co., it won’t be enough.
LATER GAMES L.A. Chargers at Oakland
3:05 p.m. KRYK PICK: Los Angeles The Raiders are 1-7 going on 1-15. To get blown out a week ago Thursday by a bad onewin San Fran team signalled to everyone that they either cannot compete at the lowest level, or don’t care to.
Miami at Green Bay
KRYK PICK: Green Bay Packers lost a close one on the West Coast, to the Rams. Packers lost a close one on the East Coast, to the Patriots. Packers are mad. Packers are gonna take it out on the coldweather-hating Dolphins.
Seattle at L.A. Rams
KRYK PICK: Los Angeles Remember when the
Rams were awful and they’d always give the then-almighty Seahawks a tough fight?
It’s not that the reverse is happening now, because Seattle isn’t bad. But this, again, will be close.
Dallas at Philadelphia
KRYK PICK: Philadelphia
If Dallas loses this to fall to 3-6 and all but out of the playoff hunt, how long can Jason Garrett last as head coach, after owner/gm Jerry Jones gave him everything he could possibly need? (Yeah, right.)
MONDAY NIGHT N.Y. Giants at San Francisco
KRYK PICK: New York
Is this the last start for Eli Manning, before the Giants finally pull the plug for good on him? Could be, if buzz out of the Big Apple is true. Meantime, for 49ers QB Nick Mullens it’s career start No. 2.
BYES THIS WEEK
Baltimore, Houston, Denver, Minnesota.
Could this week be Eli Manning’s final start with the New York Giants?
