For “Hawai­ian Soul” (pg. 80), writer and for­mer main­lan­der Su­san Casey dis­patches from the Pa­cific par­adise she now calls home. Casey, an ac­claimed jour­nal­ist and self-pro­claimed oceanista, is the for­mer ed­i­tor-in-chief of O, The Oprah Mag­a­zine and au­thor of New York Times best­selling books Voices in the Ocean, The Wave and The Devil’s Teeth.

Born in Canada and raised in Cyprus and Aus­tralia, Alkan Emin stud­ied English, art his­tory and theatre be­fore be­com­ing a pho­tog­ra­pher 15 years ago. He has since lived in Bei­jing, Hong Kong and Toronto and now calls New York home. He was back on home soil to shoot Jann Ar­den who graces our cover and who shares her ex­pe­ri­ences as a care­giver (pg. 46).

Nora Un­der­wood is an award­win­ning free­lance writer who has cov­ered all sub­ject mat­ter over her 35-year ca­reer but has a spe­cial af­fec­tion for sci­ence, medicine, health and be­hav­iour sto­ries. In this is­sue, she looks at the sur­pris­ing and wide-rang­ing af­ter-ef­fects anes­the­sia can have in “Your Brain on Surgery” (pg. 62).
