HIMACHAL HELI SKIING ARE BASED IN Manali, sat among cedar forests and 6,000-m peaks. From there they take groups up to altitudes that vary depending on group fitness and ability. The snow conditions are best after a storm but do demand at least an intermediate level of experience in such vast terrain, with verticals averaging between 900m and 1,200m. Their Odyssey package sees a maximum of 15 skiers sharing a helicopter, broken into groups of three to four skiers per guide. You get six full days totalling up to 30,500 vertical metres of skiing, with a minimum guaranteed of 20,000 vertical metres. The winter sees many religious celebrations among the Pahari people of the area and on down days, you are encouraged to visit nearby Kullu Valley where village life is an eclectic mix of hot springs, temples, art galleries, the small local ski field, bootleggers, Tibetan monasteries and the Manali bazaar. The Odyssey costs US$ 8,950, with numerous trip dates from the end of January until the beginning of April. Later weeks qualify for low season discount of 15%.
