TRENDING: THINKING LIGHT, THINKING RIGHT
Bikepacking is hot right now: using minimalist packs hung from the frame and behind the seat for light-as-possible expeditions where your ride is not defined by how much you are towing about. Bikers being bikers, it has already split into sub-genres emphasising different styles of riding. Expect further fragmentation and increasingly inventive ways to stow shelter, clothing and supplies onto a frame.
The acronym MIPS is also in the news. Shown here is the Bell Super 3 Joy Ride bike helmet for women but MIPS is also in use in ski helmets and elsewhere. It stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System and refers to a second layer in the helmet that rotates slightly, said to alleviate the shock of an impact. The debate about its benefits is not settled yet though it that has been shown that a helmet that is round, smooth and slick does help as it’s less likely to snag and then wrench your head. If you are buying a new protector soon, do your homework for the latest word on this essential issue.
