Decathlon opens Hong Kong stores
FRENCH SPORTING GOODS reta i ler, Decathlon, opened its doors in Hong Kong for the first time on August 2. The brand has 1,200 stores around the world, including outlets in Singapore, Malaysia, India, Thailand and Taiwan. Expansion in China has been especially rapid, with the number of outlets there forecast to surpass those in its home country in the next year or so. With many of the 35,000 products in the company’s inventory sourced in China, it’s no surprise that Decathlon has had an office in the territory for years. Now, with interest in sport and the outdoors becoming more mainstream in Hong Kong, they felt the time was right to enter the retail market. Decathlon has opened two Hong Kong stores to begin with, one in each of the recognised shopping districts of Mong Kok and Causeway Bay. The former is a relative goliath in a city where sky-high rents are a major factor – 2,300sqm – giving them room to display products for 45 of the 70 or so sports they support. They also expect to use the space to hold community events.
