Bora Bora, French Polynesia
‘Exotic’ dialed up to 11
The word ‘Tahiti’ is enough to transport the mind to a place where iridescent lagoons encircle islands that rear improbably to rocky forest-draped ramparts. The imagination does not deceive. The dramatic island bearing that famous name – home to the capital of French Polynesia, Papeete – is picturesque enough. But when you travel further out among the Society Islands, things just keep getting better and better. The first sight of Moorea, or Bora Bora especially, is enough to invite disbelief, looking as though they will up-end at any moment, their towering rock pyramids tipping them over into the azure waters. There are places to stay to suit all budgets but clearly the best seats in the house are taken by the over-water villas of the big-name resort chains.
