Indian Ocean idyll
Ask 100 people to name a classic desert island and chances are that none will mention Havelock, or any other island in the entire archipelago to which it belongs. Your adventure starts at Port Blair on South Andaman, the island chain’s capital. From there you can take a government ferry, an air-con cat or even a seaplane on to Havelock. The most visited of the Andamans, it remains a backwater. Granted, Havelock has recently gained its first ATMS, but the most popular form of transport is still your own two feet and anyway, if the pace of development seems too frenetic, you simply decamp to one of the many uninhabited neighbouring islands. As you’d expect, the accent is on watersports. Divers should check out the likes of Barefoot Scuba, http:/diveandamans.com/ and DIVEINDIA, http://diveindia.com/ for details beforehand to arrange gear and accommodation.
