When to go

The ski season, during which the lifts are supposed to be open – Mother Nature and Allah willing – runs from late December to mid-march. With erratic weather and poor roads subject to avalanches and rockslides, a little luck and/or divine intervention is indispensable to a successful ski trip here.

How to get there

Uzbekistan Airways and the Russian based Utair offer flights, with Turkish Airlines the most well known airline that flies to Dushanbe.

What to take

Bring all your own gear if possible. There is a rental shop in Safed Dara, but that won’t help much if you are off ski touring elsewhere. In addition, the lifts are frequently closed and it is highly likely that the rental shop will also close on those occasions.

In Dushanbe, the author and his party stayed at the Hotel Lotus, www.hotel-lo There some staff speak English and can organise taxis, accommodation elsewhere around the country etc. The author also recommends two of his helpful in-country ski contacts: audreyjannin@hot and martin. rossmann@black
