In Kazakhstan, the town of Shyambulak is the epicentre. It was part of Almaty’s failed bid for the 2022 Olympics and boasts a lift delivering you up to piste at 3,200 metres – among Asia’s highest.
Karakol, the most established resort in Kyrgyzstan, is almost as high, topping out at a little over 3,000 metres. Both places better suit experienced skiers.
