In Kaza­khstan, the town of Shyam­bu­lak is the epi­cen­tre. It was part of Almaty’s failed bid for the 2022 Olympics and boasts a lift de­liv­er­ing you up to piste at 3,200 me­tres – among Asia’s high­est.

Karakol, the most es­tab­lished re­sort in Kyr­gyzs­tan, is al­most as high, top­ping out at a lit­tle over 3,000 me­tres. Both places bet­ter suit ex­pe­ri­enced skiers.
