ITALIAN FABRIC company Pontetorto and German outdoor brand Vaude have introduced a brushed-back fleece featuring an inner surface made with biodegradable fibres. Unlike conventional fleece, Biopile is free of polyester and microplastics, so any fibre lost during washing will decompose without leaving a harmful residue in around three months. The smoother outer surface, meanwhile, is made with 100% recycled polyester. Available in three weights, Biopile is said to have excellent climate regulating and moisture transporting properties and will be introduced exclusively in Vaude’s Fall/winter 2018-19 Green Shape Core collection.
