WIN­TER BRINGS HARD­SHIP AND BEAUTY. Walk Ja­pan’s ni ne-day To­hoku Hot Spr i ng Snow Tour prom­ises a fully guided jour­ney over the snowy ter­rain of the ru­ral re­gion in north Hon­shu that will de­liver the lat­ter with a min­i­mum of the for­mer. Dom­i­nated by tow­er­ing moun­tains, re­mote val­leys, vast forests and rugged coasts, To­hoku was de­picted by Mat­suo Basho, Ja­pan’s great­est lit­er­ary fig­ure, in his most famed haiku po­etry while on an itin­er­ant jour­ney through the re­gion in the 17th Cen­tury. This jour­ney draws in­spi­ra­tion from Basho’s wan­der­ings, find­ing de­light in the sim­ple towns of the re­gion and in the win­ter light on the trees and moun­tains. The f irst cli mb sta r ts in t he charm­ing town of Nakat­sug­awa, and the tour ends in Sakata, once one of the busiest ports in the coun­try. Other lo­ca­tions in­clude Kaminoyama, Ya­madera, Gin­zan and Naruko, with sooth­ing on­sen hot spring baths in­cluded af­ter each day’s ex­plo­ration.
