Cel­e­brated in a num­ber of cities along the length of the Ganges – in­clud­ing Varanasi, Harid­war and Rishikesh – this fes­ti­val com­mem­o­rates the time the holy braid of wa­ter de­scended to Earth. Pil­grims be­lieve bathing in the river will wash away their sins. Other devo­tees send leaf boats with lit can­dles, sweets and flow­ers down the river.
