With winter just around the corner, there’s a heap of sexy new product out there for you to splash your cash on. We’ve sifted through the pile to save you the trouble and next time we’ll present our picks, from slope-tastic snow gear to mountain-ready trekking duds and trail-hungry shoes and bikes. Talking of winter, we’ll also retrace a famous journey to the west of Nepal in search of the fabled snow leopard. Back in 1973, Peter Matthiessen and George Schaller spent two months in the mountains of Dolpo. Matthiessen’s resulting book, The Snow Leopard, muses on the
material and spiritual dimensions of the journey and Andrea Oschetti sets out to discover much of the same territory for himself. Then, we move from an old-school hero of exploration to a modern-day adventurer in Benedict Allen (shown below). Famous for his ‘total immersion’ style of discovery, Allen has lived among indigenous peoples all over the planet, inspiring a school of TV documentary that continues today. We talk to him about the extraordinary people he has met and how they, and travel, have changed him.
