HELISKI ADVENTURES HAS ROLLED OUT A new offering in Antarctica – becoming the first heliskiing operator on the continent. A ship stationed at King George Island will serve as basecamp and helipad for two choppers, which guests will use to ski and explore Livingston and surrounding islands, as well as the Antarctica Peninsula. One guide will accompany each group of four, with up to 24 heliskiers catered for at a time. Having 22 hours of daylight is handy, giving the chance to ski twice a day in different locations, and when weather conditions make it difficult for the helis, the group can go ashore on zodiacs to skin up the hills with their snowboards and skis. Harnesses, carabineers and ice axes are standard equipment as you will certainly encounter glacier travel at times. Aside from the skiing, exploration extends to ice-free areas like the northwest coast that provides breeding grounds for seabirds such as petrels, skuas and four species of penguins in the southern summer. Meantime, out to sea, a variety of whales are commonly sighted. Price is €17,000 per person and interested parties can choose from three scheduled dates in December: 8-16, 15-23, 22-30.
