A City of Quietude

Beijing (English) - - CONTENTS - Translated by Wang Huihui Edited by Scott Edward Bray Photos by Beyhan Özdemir (Turkey), Colin Mcpherson (the UK), Joe Mcnally (the US), Ma Ke, Wang Dianyun, Xiu Yuchen and Zhou Xudong

Keeping quiet in a noisy neighbourhood is Beijingers’ way to get closer to culture, and cultivate themselves and their craftsmanship.

When describing those who keep both body and mind active, Beijingers often say that they are prompt in action while deliberate in counsel. Beijing, as a city, also has this quality. It’s so dynamic that people can’t help but praise its ever- changing townscape; and so peaceful that people are left in wonder at its serene implicitness.

Beijing, with its modern vitality and fashion, impresses countless tourists from all over the world—just being in the city you can feel the strong pulse of the times here and now. Yet there are also places where the roots of this ancient city’s long history are still on display. They belong to Beijingers—savouring the city’s inherent mystique, feeling the sheer beauty formed through its long history, and appreciating the profound human connection these places have to offer. Likewise, the old roots of Beijing allow them to bring their pace back down in this city that still has the magic to let people relax and take things slow, to reflect on the inner self.

Keeping quiet in a noisy neighbourhood is Beijingers’ way to get closer to culture, cultivate themselves and their craftsmanship, and achieve selfimprovement. There’s always someone coming into the spotlight in the city. Performers, patiently waiting for their chance on the stage, long for audience attention as they make their debut with curtains drawn. Young artists, working in studios with their unrestrained creativity found in the silence, can give wings to their dreams, and soar ever farther. These bright minds rapt in science and technology are in deep concentration, listening to the universe. Each allows us to feel the charm of this cultural city, and witness the elegance of its people and their pursuit of quality life.
