Yang Li­wei (cen­ter), China’s first man in space who or­bited the earth in 2003, un­der­goes sea sur­vival train­ing in waters off the coast of Yan­tai in east China’s Shan­dong Prov­ince on Au­gust 17.

A group of astro­nauts com­pris­ing 16 Chi­nese and two Euro­peans—Ger­man Matthias Josef Mau­rer and Ital­ian Sa­man­tha Cristo­fore­tti—com­pleted the train­ing in a 17-day joint pro­gram on Au­gust 21. The two Euro­peans be­came the first for­eign­ers to par­tic­i­pate in as­tro­naut train­ing in China.
