The city and its universities are testaments to each other's illustrious history. The many universities and colleges have helped to forge the culture and soul of Wuhan.
During the late Qing Dynasty, Wuhan began to develop as a prosperous industrial and commercial center as well as one of China's important education and technology centers after it opened as a treaty port.
With a total of 84 universities and colleges, Wuhan is home to many famous institutes, including Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Central China Normal University.
Wuhan University, located beside East Lake at the foot of Luojia Hill, has a history of 124 years and is regarded as the most prestigious university in Central China. While Huazhong University of Science and Technology is one of the best science and engineering universities in China; it has established many major national science and technology facilities, such as the Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics and the Pulsed High Magnetic Field Facility.
Furthermore, Wuhan has more than 100 scientific research institutions and over 40 key national laboratories and national engineering research centers in which research is conducted in a range of different fields and disciplines.
The National Information Optoelectronics Innovation Center was officially established in FiberHome Technologies on April 26. It is the first and only national information optoelectronics center, aiming to build a world-class manufacturing platform of information optoelectronics within three years.
The No.1 production and central power building of the state-level integrated circuit base project (Phase I) is nowready for operation. It was the first such base approved by the State Council in February 2016. By 2022, when the three buildings start full operation, the capacity potential is expected to be 300,000 chips per month.
