China, Rus­sia said to be close to nat­u­ral gas deal

China and Rus­sia are ex­pected to reach agree­ments on nat­u­ral gas dur­ing Rus­sian Pres­i­dent Vladimir Putin’s up­com­ing state visit to China.

Putin will be in China from May 20 to 21 at the in­vi­ta­tion of Chi­nese Pres­i­dent Xi Jin­ping.

A source with China Na­tional Petroleum Corp, the coun­try’s en­ergy gi­ant, told China Daily that the two par­ties have reached agree­ment on tech­ni­cal and commercial is­sues with dif­fer­ences re­main­ing over price, the source said.

China doesn’t now im­port Rus­sian gas through pipe­lines. Un­der a pre­vi­ous agree­ment Rus­sia’s top nat­u­ral gas pro­ducer, Gazprom OAO, will sup­ply China with 38 bil­lion cu­bic me­ters of gas an­nu­ally un­til 2018.
