Alibaba breaks Nov 11 online sales record
China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba shattered the singleday sales for its Nov 11 online shopping festival, known as “11.11’’, reaching a new mark more than 10 hours earlier than last year.
Online sales on Alibaba’s Tmall.com, Taobao.com and its overseas outlets, such as AliExpress, topped 57.1 billion yuan ($9.34 billion) as of 11:30 pm Tuesday, beating Tmall and Taobao’s combined 2013 Singles’ Day sales of 36.2 billion yuan, according to the company.
This year is the first time Alibaba has chosen to launch its Singles’ Day campaign on both its domestic and overseas platforms.
Created in 2009, the event was originally launched to tempt single people without partners to console themselves with some retail therapy, spurred on by massive discounts from retailers. (Photo 3)
