The central government approved the construction plan for the project, which will be the city’s third airport. It will involve investment of almost 80 billion yuan ($13.1 billion) and take about five years to complete, the National Development and Reform Commission said.

It will be located 46 kilometers (28.58 miles) south of Tian’anmen Square in Daxing district, and is expected to become operational in 2018. A 66-km rapid transit line will be built to link the city’s northern areas to the new airport. Passengers will spend less than 30 minutes getting to the city center from the airport.

The airport will include a 700,000 square-meter terminal.
