Chengdu wins approval for a second airport
The central government has approved the construction of a new airport in Chengdu, Sichuan province. Chengdu will be China’s third city with two airports following Beijing and Shanghai, the local government said onWednesday. The second airport with three new runways will be a regional hub and be funded with 69.263 billion yuan ($11.18 billion) in total. Expected to start this year, the project will have the capacity for 40 million passenger-trips by 2025. Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, which is the fourthlargest airport in China, had a passenger volume of 33.4 million passenger-trips in 2013 and is likely to be saturated by 2017.
