Chengdu wins ap­proval for a sec­ond air­port

The cen­tral gov­ern­ment has ap­proved the con­struc­tion of a new air­port in Chengdu, Sichuan prov­ince. Chengdu will be China’s third city with two air­ports fol­low­ing Beijing and Shang­hai, the lo­cal gov­ern­ment said onWed­nes­day. The sec­ond air­port with three new run­ways will be a re­gional hub and be funded with 69.263 bil­lion yuan ($11.18 bil­lion) in to­tal. Ex­pected to start this year, the project will have the ca­pac­ity for 40 mil­lion pas­sen­ger-trips by 2025. Chengdu Shuan­gliu In­ter­na­tional Air­port, which is the fourth­largest air­port in China, had a pas­sen­ger vol­ume of 33.4 mil­lion pas­sen­ger-trips in 2013 and is likely to be sat­u­rated by 2017.
