Sports lottery sales surge

China Daily (Canada) - - FRONT PAGE -

China’s sports lottery sales grew 32.8 percent in 2014 to 176.41 billion yuan ($28.38 billion), well ahead of industry expectations of 100 billion yuan because of the World Cup

Sports sales accounted for nearly half of the country’s total lottery sales, which increased 23.6 percent from the previous year to 382.38 billion yuan.

The sports lottery was introduced to raise funds for the 1990 Asia Games in Beijing. After administrative fees and jackpot payments, the net proceeds go to public welfare projects.
