Alipay increases cash-filled red envelopes
Alipay Wallet, the mobile payment application backed by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd, has added an extra 12 million yuan ($1.92 million) to online cashfilled red envelopes after complaints.
Chinese people traditionally give red envelopes filled with money as a gift during Spring Festival.
The company said it would offer further cash filled envelopes, with a total value of 25 million yuan.
The red envelope campaign, which began during last year’s Spring Festival with Tencent’s widely used messaging app WeChat, has proved a huge success in terms of generating new users of mobile payment services.
A total investment of more than 7 billion yuan is estimated to be put in this year’s campaign by Internet firms.
