Beijing faces tougher parking rules
Too many vehicles and too few places to park mean that Beijing residents may have to buy a parking space before purchasing a new car.
It is expected that current car owners will have to prove they are paying for parking spaces, and parking violations will be enforced, according to Vice-Mayor Zhang Yankun. A study of the problem will begin this year, and the new regulations are expected to be launched next year, Zhang said.
Beijing had 5.59 million vehicles at the end of last year, but only around 2.9 million parking spaces. Based on internationally accepted guidelines, there should be 3.5 million parking spaces to meet the current demand.
