The Bar­ley Coun­cil of Canada, Canada’s na­tional bar­ley value chain or­ga­ni­za­tion and China Agri­cul­ture Univer­sity’s Col­lege of An­i­mal Science and Tech­nol­ogy signed an agree­ment that sig­nals the be­gin­ning of bi­lat­eral co­op­er­a­tion to de­velop and es­tab­lish a multi-year re­search study on the eco­nomic ben­e­fits of us­ing Cana­dian feed bar­ley in dairy, beef and hog ra­tions to Chi­nese live­stock pro­duc­ers.

On the visit to Chongqing mu­nic­i­pal, Lyon said she hopes that Canada can find more co­op­er­a­tion op­por­tu­ni­ties with cen­tral and western re­gions of China on agri­cul­ture prod­ucts.

Agri­cul­ture prod­ucts ac­count for about 25 per­cent of bi­lat­eral trade be­tween Canada and China. In 2014 the to­tal trade value of the two coun­tries was C$5.3 bil­lion.

Canada is the fifth largest agri­cul­ture prod­ucts ex­port­ing coun­try. In 2014, it ex­ported 45 per­cent of its do­mes­tic agri­cul­ture prod­ucts to more than 200 coun­tries.

China is the num­ber one con­sumer of veg­etable oil in the world (31 mil­lion tonnes a year) and its num­ber two im­porter (11 mil­lion tonnes a year).
