Documentary among winners
More than 400 films from all over the world were shown in 45 cinemas at the 18th annual Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) from June 13 to 21.
A jury panel led by Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev chose the Golden Goblet Award winners. The Night Watchman, a film produced in France and Belgium, won the award for best feature film, and Carte Blanche from Poland won the jury grand prix.
Cao Baoping, director of Chinese film The Dead End, won the award for best director. Three actors: Deng Chao, Duan Yihong and Guo Tao shared the award for best actor for their performance in The Dead End.
Krista Kosonen from Finland, who played the leading role in The Midwife, won the award for best actress.
The Verse of Us was the only documentary from China among the nominees up for the best documentary film, and won the award. This is the maiden work from Wu Feiyue and Qin Xiaoyu. The first documentary film in China to be made with public funding on the Internet, The Verse of Us tells the story of talented working class poets in contemporary China. They are miners, seamstresses, rock blasters and so on, who find consolation from hard labor and difficulties in life.
Producer of the film Wu Xiaobo said documentaries have had only a marginal market in China, and he hoped to take the film on tour to major universities and commercial projection in public cinemas.
“China has 230 million workers at present. We believe it is important for people to learn their stories from their own perspective,” he said.
