Shanghai to set up ‘sponge city’ standards
The municipal government of Shanghai will gradually craft its own standards for being a “sponge city”, the Xinmin Evening News reported. A sponge city refers to one that can effectively manage a flood or drought. Among the city’s roads, 360,000 square meters can achieve the sponge level, but much still needs to be improved as the city has 100 sq km of roads to manage. Earlier this year, several government departments had jointly proposed to transform Shanghai into a sponge city, saying they will work out detailed standards soon.
