Pro­gramto boost farm­land yields

The Chi­nese Acad­emy of Sci­ences said the coun­try is pi­lot­ing a pro­gram to in­crease out­put on medi­u­mand low-yield farm­land, hop­ing to add 9 bil­lion kilo­grams of grain to the food sup­ply in the fu­ture. An of­fi­cial at the acad­emy said on Tues­day that the pro­gram, mainly tar­get­ing the Huanghuai­hai Plain, which pro­duces a large pro­por­tion of China’s grain, is ex­pected to cover some 4.7 mil­lion hectares of farm­land start­ing next year and ben­e­fit some 70 mil­lion farm­ers in Shan­dong, He­nan, An­hui and Jiangsu prov­inces.
