Satel­lite named af­ter Mon­key King

The DarkMat­ter Par­ti­cle Ex­plorer, a Chi­nese satel­lite that is set to ex­plore the na­ture of dark mat­ter in space, got a nick­name on Wed­nes­day— Wukong— in honor of theMon­key King. The name was se­lected by theN­ational Space Science Cen­ter of the Chi­nese Acad­emy of Sci­ences from a list of sug­ges­tions made by the pub­lic. The Mon­key King is a char­ac­ter in the clas­sic Chi­nese tale,

A world­wide cam­paign was launched to so­licit a name for the satel­lite, and 32,000 en­tries were sub­mit­ted be­tween Sept 29 and Oct 31.
