had per­formed checks on four batches of bot­tled wa­ter from the com­pany’s six pro­duc­tion sites. Re­ports later emerged that the Bei­jing Times ac­tu­ally owned a min­eral wa­ter com­pany, which led to spec­u­la­tion about how the re­ports were aimed at destab­lish­ing Nongfu Spring.

Last year, Zhong again raised eye­brows when he an­nounced his de­ci­sion to break into the “lux­ury wa­ter” seg­ment to com­pete with pre­mium for­eign brands such as Evian and Per­rier af­ter dis­cov­er­ing an ideal wa­ter source in the Chang­bai Moun­tains in Jilin prov­ince. This lat­est wa­ter plant, the com­pany’s 16th across China, is tucked away in the foot of the moun­tain range bor­der­ing North Korea.
