Beijing to build corridors to reduce pollution

China Daily (Canada) - - NEWS CAPSULE -

Beijing plans to build ventilation corridors across the city to ease air pollution by bridging parks and conservation areas into greenbelts, a local official said.

The city will build five large corridors more than 500 meters (1,640 feet) wide, and more than 10 corridors 80 meters wide, Wang Fei, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning, said at a news conference.

Wang said the corridors will improve air flow and reduce the effects of the urban heat island, which results from structures that block airflow as well as from excess heat produced by energy consumption and activity in the city.
