A 59-year-old woman has won praise for her hard life in which she lived in a vacant toilet cubicle with her husband for 10 years and held down four jobs so she could afford to send her two sons to study at top universities.

In 2006, migrant worker Wang Xiumei started living in the 100-square-foot cubicle in Wuhan, Hubei province, with her husband, who was too ill to work. Her jobs included cleaning a karaoke bar and a university, selling milk on the streets and working at a restaurant. Wang, who is originally from a rural area, said she often had only three to four hours of sleep a night. Now she is just cleaning the bar and the university.

Her sons are in postgraduate studies at universities in Beijing and are expected to finish their courses next year.
