VWa­grees to set­tle emis­sions fraud

Volk­swa­gen AG, the Ger­man au­tomaker, has agreed on two set­tle­ments to buy back or fix some of its diesel ve­hi­cles sold on the US mar­ket with “de­fec­tive de­vices” and to mit­i­gate en­vi­ron­men­tal harms caused by the pol­lut­ing ve­hi­cles. The set­tle­ments, filed by the US De­part­ment of Jus­tice on Tues­day, in­clude up to $10 bil­lion for buy­backs or fixes, $2.7 bil­lion over three years to fund projects aimed at re­duc­ing emis­sions of ni­tro­gen ox­ide plus $2 bil­lion over 10 years to fund pro­grams de­signed to pro­mote elec­tric ve­hi­cles or other zero-emis­sion op­tions.
