Funds avail­able to help Bei­jing’s book­stores

Brick-and-mor­tar book­stores around the world have been hurt by on­line stores and the growth of e-books. Now Bei­jing is try­ing to help book­stores in the cap­i­tal city.

Bei­jing has ear­marked $2.7 mil­lion in fi­nan­cial sup­port for book re­tail­ers. Those who are li­censed, have fixed stores and have been op­er­at­ing for at least three years can ap­ply for the fi­nan­cial sup­port.

The aid of­fer came from the mu­nic­i­pal bu­reau of press, pub­li­ca­tions, ra­dio, film and tele­vi­sion. It said the govern­ment plans to sup­port 70 book­stores this year, and the max­i­mum amount for each store is about $150,000.
