Getting in line for Shanghai’s most popular ice cream, taking selfies against the majestic skylines and experiencing the city's famous nightlife and party scene, Gigi Hadid’s maiden trip to China could not have been more touristy.

“I think most of the time I love just watching people that are around me. It’s real and surreal,” said Hadid, an Instagram superstar with some 25 million followers.

But the 21-year-old American supermodel was not in town to play. Instead, she was in Shanghai as part of the global tour to promote the Tommy Hilfiger X Gigi Hadid capsule collection, following appearances in Tokyo, Berlin and Dubai. The fashion campaign is her largest since beginning collaborations with Hilfiger last year.

Dressed in an oversized bomber jacket from the collection, which she calls “a perfect first design job”, and leather leggings, Hadid visited the massively popular Shanghai ice cream store WIYF — customers often have to wait at least an hour in queue — before interacting with Chinese social media influencers and attending a meet-and-greet session with fans at Three on the Bund.

Her collection features casual wear, shoes and timepieces that are all characterized by Hadid’s “American girl-next-door style” and had hit the shelves early in September after they were shown at New York Fashion Week.

Early in October, before Hadid embarked on her tour of Asia, Hilfiger announced that up to 50 percent of the collection had already been snapped up.

Having started her runway career at the age of two with Guess Baby, whose co-founder is a family friend, Hadid said that she only started to take the profession seriously during her college years.

She scored major breakthroughs in her career when she was appointed as the brand ambassador for cosmetics giant Maybelline and made headlines for her appearance on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show last year.

When asked about her experience in the fashion industry thus far, she told China Daily that the part that she hates the most is having to be away from home for weeks. On the bright side, she cites the people she gets to work with as her favorite part of the job.

“Because it’s either you get along with the people very well and experience new things with them, or you are kind of thrown into a situation where you don’t know anyone and I think it’s really fun when you finally all click and get to know each other,” said Hadid.

Wen Wenyi contributed to the story.
