Blue sky in Beijing after a week of smog

China Daily (Canada) - - NEWS CAPSULE -

Beijing residents saw blue skies on Sunday, as a cold front dispersed smog that had been hovering over the capital for the past week. Having been cooped up indoors for a week, many people took to streets and parks for the first time this year.

Blue skies are forecast for the next few days.

Cai Qi, deputy Party chief and acting mayor of Beijing, has promised to take tougher measures to improve the city's air quality in 2017.

“Open-air barbecues, garbage incineration, biomass burning and road dust, for example, are acts of noncompliance with regulations, and the result of lax supervision and weak law enforcement,” he said, adding that the city will launch an environmental police force to address the issues in its 16 districts.
