Leading auto manufacturer GAC Motor has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve Administration and the World Wildlife Fund on a three-year environmental protection project, taking an important role in the development of China’s first national park conservation plan.

The SanjiangyuanNational Nature Reserve, in Qinghai province, is China’s most important freshwater source — containing the headwaters of the Yangtze, Mekong and Yellow rivers.

The Sanjiangyuan, which translates as “headwaters of the three rivers,” is also one of China’s priority areas in biodiversity conservation and home to large varieties of wildlife that provide a gene bank of rare plateau species.

Under the memorandum of cooperation Guangzhoubased GAC Motor will provide two of its flagship SUV GS8 and three GS5 Super vehicles for the natural reserve’s daily operations and routine patrols.

This will be followed by a series of strategic joint work for the Sanjiangyuan freshwater lakes’ protection, as well as institutional improvement and public awareness and education, said GAC Motor General Manager Yu Jun.

“As a carmaker manufacturing low-carbon and environmentally friendly vehicles, we will offer allaround support financially for the conservation plan of thewetland reserve,” Yusaid.

The company’s GS8 SUV, released in November last year, and the GS5 Super model, have been tested to deliver optimal performance under harsh conditions. These include traveling on ice fields and rough terrain, making them ideal to operate in the national reserve on theQinghai-Tibet Plateau, whichhave an average altitude with 4,000 meters, Yu said.

facing a growing ecological crisis due to global warming and human activity,” Yu said.

According to the StateForestry Administration, the number of wildlife species in the area reduced by almost half between 1970 and 2010.

“As a company that regards environmental protection and sustainable technology as a top priority, we are willing to set an example for what companies should do to protect the environment and encourage more to join the national park conservation plan to achieve a balanced development between people and nature in the Sanjiangyuan area,” Yu said.

According to its administration, the Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve will develop intoChina’s first national park by 2020.

The partnership marks another step in GACMotor’s participation in public welfare projects — since the company was founded nine years ago — in a wide range of areas such as environmental protection, education, safe travel and charity.

GAC Motor’s past public welfare projects include the afforestation project in Longchuan county, Guangdong province, involving the planting of a forest that greatly improved soil and water conservation in the Dongjiang River region.
