Timeline of cross-Huangpu River bridges and tunnels
Shanghai and Zhejiang province’s Jiaxing and Huzhou, while its lower deck is used as local roads linking Minhang district and Pudong.
The second Minpu Bridge, a river-crossing highway completed shortly after the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, is built, connecting Minhang district and Fengxian district.
Construction of Chenta Road Bridge across the River in Songjiang district is completed.
Kunyang Road Cross-River Bridge, another bridge across the Huangpu River linking Minhang and Fengxian to the city’s downtown area, is scheduled for completion.
Dapu Road Tunnel, the
first tunnel underneath the Huangpu River for vehicles in Shanghai, is built. The tunnel consists of two tubes, the first of which was constructed in 1971 for northbound traffic only and the second in 2010 for southbound traffic.
Yan’an East Road Tunnel, which connects the heart of Pudong around the Lujiazui financial hub with the central Puxi area near the bund, is built.
The Shanghai Bund Tunnel, China’s first cross-river tunnel for pedestrians, is completed. The tunnel also serves as a tourist attraction and a conduit for slow-moving underground vehicles traveling between the Bund and Lujiazui.
Construction of the Shanghai Outer Ring Tunnel is completed. It is the first cross-river tunnel in Shanghai constructed using the immersed tunneling method.
Dalian Road Tunnel, which connects Pudong New Area with Yangpu and Hongkou districts, is unveiled.
Fuxing East Road Tunnel, the world’s first double-deck tunnel with six lanes used for highway transportation in the city, becomes operational.
Xiangyin Road Tunnel is built.
Shangzhong Road Tunnel is completed.
Two connected tunnels, Renmin Road Tunnel and Xinjian Road Tunnel, are opened to traffic.
Longyao Road Tunnel, the 10th link across the Huangpu River in Shanghai, is completed.
Xizang South Road Tunnel, which is used as the special crossriver tunnel for vehicles during 2010 Shanghai World Expo, is open to the public.
Jungong Road Tunnel is built.
Hongmei South Road Tunnel, the first tunnel across the river passing through both southern Shanghai’s Minhang and Fengxian districts, becomes operational.
Changjiang Road Tunnel, Huangpu River’s widest tunnel that has served as an alternative river crossing route for residents in northern Shanghai, is built.
