Satel­lite will help mon­i­tor en­vi­ron­ment

China launched the Gaofen 5 high­res­o­lu­tion Earth ob­ser­va­tion satel­lite on May 9 to as­sist in the na­tion’s en­vi­ron­men­tal pro­tec­tion ef­forts. The satel­lite blasted off atop a Long March 4C car­rier rocket at 2:28 am at Taiyuan Satel­lite Launch Cen­ter in Shanxi province. It was the 274th flight mis­sion by a Long March rock- et, ac­cord­ing to the State Ad­min­is­tra­tion of Science, Tech­nol­ogy and In­dus­try for Na­tional De­fense, which over­sees the pro­gram. The satel­lite was de­vel­oped and pro­duced by the Shang­hai Academy of Space­flight Tech­nol­ogy, a sub­sidiary of China Aero­space Science and Tech­nol­ogy Corp, and will be used mainly by the Min­istry of Ecol­ogy and En­vi­ron­ment, the Min­istry of Nat­u­ral Re­sources and the China Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Ad­min­is­tra­tion.
