China’s largest lake gets even big­ger

Qing­hai Lake, China’s largest, mea­sured 4,433 square kilo­me­ters dur­ing the most re­cent dry sea­son, which ran from De­cem­ber to Fe­bru­ary — an ex­pan­sion of 7.31 square kilo­me­ters over the same pe­riod last year. The fig­ure rep­re­sents an 18-year record high dur­ing the dry sea­son, ac­cord­ing to the Qing­hai In­sti­tute of Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Sciences. The largest recorded area of the lake was 4,478 sq km in 1974. The re­cent ex­pan­sion is the re­sult of abun­dant rain in March and April in the sur­round­ing area, ac­cord­ing to Liu Baokang, an en­gi­neer at the in­sti­tute.
