China’s largest lake gets even bigger
Qinghai Lake, China’s largest, measured 4,433 square kilometers during the most recent dry season, which ran from December to February — an expansion of 7.31 square kilometers over the same period last year. The figure represents an 18-year record high during the dry season, according to the Qinghai Institute of Meteorological Sciences. The largest recorded area of the lake was 4,478 sq km in 1974. The recent expansion is the result of abundant rain in March and April in the surrounding area, according to Liu Baokang, an engineer at the institute.
