Chinese scientists have appealed for further strengtheninf of international cooperation in space exploration, aiming to reduce the risk from near-Earth objects. Compared with global issues like food security, energy shortage, climate change, cyberattacks and environmental pollution caused by human activities, more serious threats to the planet may come from space, said Chen Jiansheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a senior astronomer, at a conference promoting science literacy. There are more than 18,000 near-Earth asteroids, around 800 of which have a diameter greater than 1 kilometer.
