Thou­sands bid fi­nal farewell

Tens of thou­sands of South African mourn­ers waited in line on Fri­day to view the body of Nel­son Man­dela, which was ly­ing in state for the third and fi­nal day. Many queued up de­spite the like­li­hood that they would be turned away be­fore the cas­ket was taken away later in the day. The gov­ern­ment said some 50,000 peo­ple had gath­ered, and sources said lines in Pre­to­ria, South Africa’s cap­i­tal, were al­ready sev­eral kilo­me­ters long.
