Chamber elects new chairman
The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC), one of Hong Kong’s largest business chambers, elected Jonathan Choi Koon-shum as its new chairman last Friday.
The chairman of local conglomerate Sun Wah Group will serve as the head of the 50th-term board of the chamber, succeeding Charles Yeung Chun-kam, founder and chairman of Glorious Sun Enterprises.
Choi is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and one of Hong Kong’s representatives to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Advisory Council.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Friday, Choi vowed to work closely with the nation’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20), the unprecedented overseas vision — the Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative — and promote the development of the Guangdong-Hong KongMacao big bay area.
The chamber is one of the largest bridges for Hong Kong industrialists and businessmen to join the country’s development. Therefore, the CGCC will further maximize the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, and unlock more opportunities in cooperation with mainland partners, Choi said.
The CGCC is also a member of B&R Industrial and Commercial Alliance. It will organize a series of training and exchange activities along the B&R routes, facilitating enterprises from all countries and regions in their search for opportunities, Choi pledged.
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s reunification with the coun- try. The chamber plans to organize a B&R summit in France for relevant stakeholders to seize new opportunities from the B&R. Another business summit among East Asian economies will be held in Hong Kong, in discussion about deeper regional cooperation. Commerce ministers from 13 economies will attend, Choi revealed.
