Giants make Mark richest closer
The San Francisco Giants landed the top-tier closer they have been seeking for months, agreeing to a four-year, $62 million contract with righthander Mark Melancon on Monday.
It’s the richest contract ever for a closer, topping Jonathan Papelbon’s four-year, $50 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies from 2012-15 and Mariano Rivera’s one-year salary of $15 million from the New York Yankees in 2012.
Once he passes a physical, the 29-year-old Melancon will receive a $20 million signing bonus, of which $8 million is deferred.
He will then earn salaries of $4 million for 2017, $10 million in 2018 and $14 million in each of the 2019 and 2020 seasons.
