10 probed over fa­tal col­lapse

Ten sus­pects are un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion for their li­a­bil­ity in a deadly con­struc­tion site ac­ci­dent in Fengcheng, Jiangxi prov­ince, the Supreme Peo­ple’s Procu­ra­torate said on Mon­day.

Among the peo­ple un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion, nine are sus­pected of “se­ri­ous dere­lic­tion of duty”, while one is sus­pected of “of­fer­ing bribes”, ac­cord­ing to the top procu­ra­torate.

A plat­form more than 70 me­ters high in a cool­ing tower at the Gan­neng Fengcheng power sta­tion crashed to the ground on Nov 24, killing 74 peo­ple and in­jur­ing an­other two.

The tower was part of a 7.67 bil­lion yuan ($1.1 bil­lion) ex­pan­sion plan for the coal­fired power sta­tion.

The ex­pan­sion project’s direc­tor, Deng Yongchao, and its qual­ity con­trol head, Yang Yun­fei, have been charged with dere­lic­tion of duty, ac­cord­ing to top procu­ra­torate.

They “are highly re­spon­si­ble for the oc­cur­rence of the in­ci­dent”, the procu­ra­torate said.

Prose­cu­tors also charged an­other per­son with bribery in re­la­tion to the in­ci­dent.
