Legislators accept mayor’s resignation
Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress accepted the resignation of Mayor Huang Qifan on Friday, and appointed Zhang Guoqing as the acting mayor of the municipality. Huang, born in 1952, had worked in Shanghai before moving to Chongqing in 2001 to serve as the deputy mayor. He became mayor of Chongqing in 2010. Zhang, born in 1964, a former general manager of China North Industries Group Corp, became deputy Party chief of Chongqing in April 2013. The traditional industrial hub in Southwest China has witnessed rapid growth since it became the fourth municipality under the direct leadership of the central government in 1997. It led the national GDP growth rate rankings in 2014 and 2015.
