Leg­is­la­tors ac­cept mayor’s res­ig­na­tion

Chongqing Mu­nic­i­pal Peo­ple’s Congress ac­cepted the res­ig­na­tion of Mayor Huang Qi­fan on Fri­day, and ap­pointed Zhang Guo­qing as the act­ing mayor of the mu­nic­i­pal­ity. Huang, born in 1952, had worked in Shanghai be­fore mov­ing to Chongqing in 2001 to serve as the deputy mayor. He be­came mayor of Chongqing in 2010. Zhang, born in 1964, a for­mer gen­eral man­ager of China North In­dus­tries Group Corp, be­came deputy Party chief of Chongqing in April 2013. The tra­di­tional in­dus­trial hub in South­west China has wit­nessed rapid growth since it be­came the fourth mu­nic­i­pal­ity un­der the direct lead­er­ship of the cen­tral gov­ern­ment in 1997. It led the na­tional GDP growth rate rank­ings in 2014 and 2015.
