The phrase hat tip refers to an oval or cir­cu­lar piece of ma­te­rial used to line the crown of a hat. A new mean­ing of the phrase de­rived from the verb tip has now been added, de­not­ing the ac­tion of tip­ping or doff­ing one’s hat in greet­ing or ac­knowl­edg­ment and hence, fig­u­ra­tively, an ex­pres­sion of grat­i­tude or ad­mi­ra­tion.
