Founding a new university
A senior Malaysian education official expresses the hope that a Chinese university will establish a campus in Malaysia. The Ministry of Education selects Xiamen University in Fujian province to turn the request into a reality. Najib Razak, the Malaysian prime minister, officially extends an invitation to Zhu Chongshi, president of Xiamen University, to establish a campus in Malaysia. The China Development Bank, Sunsuria Development and Xiamen University sign a joint agreement, in the presence of President Xi Jinping and Najib, to provide support for construction of the campus. Construction of the university begins. An opening ceremony is held for the first batch of students to study at Xiamen University Malaysia. The first students from the Chinese mainland enroll at the campus.
