Unearthing dark family secrets
Date: July 15 - 23 Venue: Hong Kong City Hall Theatre 5 Edinburgh Pl, Central http://www.hkrep.com/en/ events/17-3/ Hong Kong Repertory Theatre stages a Cantonese adaptation of Sam Shepard’s a play that won a Pulitzer in 1979. The New York Times hailed it as “an American Gothic masterwork”. Based on the idea of the shattering of the American Dream and the collapse of traditional family structures and values, Shepard’s play begins with a baby dying in a peasant family. Only the grandfather knows where the baby was buried. As the rest of the family members try to locate the baby’s mortal remains, the skeletons in their cupboards tumble out. Although the Hong Kong version is set within the framework of realistic story-telling, artistic director Anthony Chan and director Travis Preston have incorporated one or two experimental elements as well.
